Keep Your Skin Hydrated This Winter

As we age, it becomes more and more difficult for our skin to maintain moisture. Heated buildings, hot showers, frequent washing and winter chills can dehydrate skin ten-fold.

Here are six day-to-day approaches to combating dehydration.

1. Drink Water. Staying hydrated makes you dewy from the inside.

2. Seal in Moisture. Topically, you need to seal in moisture. Try using body oil or a creamy lotion while still damp from the shower.

3. Don’t Over-Wash your Face. Washing strips away the barrier oils your skin needs to protect against dryness. While you’re at it, don’t use soap, use a mild facial cleanser made for your skin type.

4. Invest in a Humidifier. Heaters tend to be drying, so to add a little moisture to the air, set up a humidifier in rooms you are frequently in (especially the bedroom while sleeping). Humidity should be kept between 30% and 50%, with 40% being ideal for skin.

5. Eat Avocados. Avocados have a ton of monounsaturated fat which keeps skin hydrated. Other foods with high monounsaturated fat include olive oil, macadamia nuts, almonds, and peanut butter.

6. Get Your Vitamin E. Many people associate vitamin E with skin health, as a lack of it can make your skin look dull and drab. Get your daily dose of this anti-oxidant to keep your skin moist and supple. You can find vitamin E in olives, sunflower seeds, peanuts, almonds, wheat germ and leafy greens like kale. You can also take it as a supplement or break open the capsule and rub it on your face.

Note: Be careful. Before adding oils directly to your face, make sure your skin is actually dry and not just dehydrated. There is a difference. If you have dry skin, oils work well, but if you have oily skin that is merely dehydrated, stick to water soluble products that help retain water and replenish water in the skin.
